- T.E.R.F. - Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminist/Feminism
- Terminal Hair - Thick, dark hair which typically appears on the head, armpits, pubic region, and face (depending on hormones).
- Testosterone - The main male sex hormone in the human body. Supplemental testosterone is sometimes taken by trans people, usually with the intent of achieving a more masculine appearance.
- The Surgery - A mysterious and frightening transformation spoken of by cis people who don’t know anything about how trans people actually transition.
- Third Gender - A phrase used in anthropology for genders and gender roles that do not fit the Western constructs of “man” or “woman.” Some people find the phrase offensive because of its colonialist or Eurocentric associations.
- Thyroid Cartilage Reduction - A throat surgery that reduces the prominence of an Adam’s apple.
- T.I.N. - Transgender, Nonbinary, and Intersex
- T.M.O.C. - Transgender Man/Men Of Color
- Tomboy -
- A woman, usually a young girl, who behaves or dresses in a traditionally masculine or boyish way.
- Occasionally used as a nonbinary gender or presentation.
- Typically refers to an individual who identifies as a girl/woman, but presents in a masculine manner.
- Top Surgery - Surgery that has to do with either the creation or removal of breasts.
- T.P.O.C. - Transgender Person/People Of Color
- T.Q.P.O.C. - Transgender and/or Queer Person/People Of Color
- Trachea Shave - A colloquial term for thyroid cartilage reduction surgery.
- Trans - Slang for transgender.
- Trans* - Variant of “trans” that specifically denotes inclusion of nonbinary, genderqueer and gender-variant people. The asterisk is controversial.
- Trans+ - An umbrella term for referring to both the transgender community, and those who may not necessarily identify as transgender, but have overlapping experiences.
- Trans-Adjacent - An umbrella term for those who may not be transgender, but have experiences that overlap with those of the transgender community. This includes (but is not limited to) those who are questioning their gender, gender non-conforming, drag performers, crossdressers, and transvestites.
- Transandrophobia - Term describing the specific kinds of transphobia that trans-masculine individuals face.
- Trans Exclusive Radical Feminism - A sector of the feminist movement that does not accept trans people.
- Transfeminine - Umbrella term for those transitioning towards a feminine gender.
- Transgender -
- An umbrella term for all people and genders that do not match the gender that they were assigned at birth, or which was imposed on them by society, or which they were raised as.
- When you do not identify as your AGAB. The opposite of cisgender.
- Transition - To change one’s presentation to reflect a gender other than the one assigned at birth. Transitioning may include, but does not require, any of the following: changing one’s pronouns, wearing different clothing than before, altering one’s legal gender, taking hormone therapy, and undergoing surgery.
- Transman - Alternative spelling for trans man. Not recommended because it is sometimes seen as implying that “transman” is separate from “man,” a form of cissexism.
- Trans Man/Transgender Man - A man who is transgender.
- Transmasculine - Umbrella term for those transitioning towards a masculine gender.
- Transmedicalist - Someone who belives that you must experience extreme gender dysphoria, medically transition (or at least want to), and overall have an extremely binary, rigid, and conforming gender identity in order to be considered transgender. Transmeds are known to harass other trans people in order to try and appeal to cis people.
- Transmisandronoir - Term describing the intersextion of transphobia, misandry, transandrophobia, and racism as experienced by black transgender men.
- Transmisogynoir - Term describing the intersection of transphobia, misogyny, transmisogyny, and racism as experienced by black transgender women.
- Transmisogyny - Refers to the discrimination, especially transphobia and misogyny, directed at transgender women (or anyone outwardly perceived as a transgender woman).
- Transneutral - Umbrella term for those transitioning towards a neutral gender.
- Transphobe - A person who acts, thinks or speaks with transphobia.
- Transphobia -
- Fear or hatred of transsexuality.
- Prejudice, stigma, or discrimination against trans, nonbinary and/or genderqueer people. Can occur as both an individual attitude and as a widespread social force.
- Transsexual -
- Older term used to refer to those who are transgender. Typically used as a synonym for transgender. More commonly used to refer to those who are binary and medically transition. The opposite of cissexual.
- A person whose gender does not match their assigned sex (similar to transgender).
- A person who has changed, or wishes to change, their anatomy to better reflect their true gender. This is a loaded term and should not be used to refer to someone without their permission. Some transsexual people do not identify as transgender.
- Trans Tape - Body-safe adhesive used for binding one's breasts.
- Transvestite -
- Old-fashioned word for a person who wears clothing of another gender. Not to be confused with transgender or transsexual. A loaded term, not recommended (unless you are sure that the person you are describing prefers to be called this).
- Someone who wears clothes/makeup/other indicators of gender expression which do not traditionally align with their gender identity. For example; a man wearing feminine clothing, or a woman wearing masculine clothing.
- Transwoman - Alternative spelling for trans woman. Not recommended because it is sometimes seen as implying that “transwoman” is separate from “woman,” a form of cissexism.
- Trans Woman/Transgender Woman - A woman who is transgender.
- Trigender -
- Not identifying as male, female or androgynous, but constructing one’s own distinct gender.
- Having a gender identity that includes or shifts between three or more distinct genders, similarly to bigender.
- Trigger -
- A word, object or other thing that sends a person into an intense state of anxiety, depression, dysphoria, or other negative feelings. Some people with gender dysphoria find that it is exacerbated by certain triggers.
- A medical term used to refer to something that triggers a PTSD attack.
- T.R.T. - Testosterone Replacement Therapy
- True Gender - One's experienced gender; the gender you identify as.
- Truscum -
- Trans people who invalidate or perpetuate prejudice against other trans people, often by claiming that others are not “truly” trans or “trans enough.”
- Slang term for transmedicalist.
- Tucking - Moving the genitals into place to make the presence of a penis less obvious.
- T.V. - Transvestite
- T.W.O.C - Transgender Woman/Women Of Color
- Two-Spirit/Two-Spirited - A gender, identity, social role, and/or tradition of some Native cultures of the Americas. This term should not be appropriated by non-Native people. Two-spirit people may or may not also identify as trans or nonbinary.
