Breast Augmentation

Introduction

While going on HRT gives some transfeminine individuals the breasts they desire, some transfems either prefer not to go on hormones, or still simply desire going a surgical route for the results they seek.
For those who undergo hormone therapy before surgery, a minimum of 12 months on hormones is recommended.

While this website is focused on topics regarding those who are trangender, breast augmentation is a surgery that many cisgender women also recieve. However, transgender women are more likely than cisgender women to face additional obstacles before surgery, such as having to attend therapy and getting a letter confirming a diagnosis of gender dysphoria. Lacking such a diagnosis can result in higher costs if insurance does not cover a lack of gender dysphoria; considering it instead cosmetic.

General Information

Breast augmentation refers to surgery used to create or enlarge breasts.

The surgery is short, lasting approximately 1-2hours.

Incisions are typically covered with surgical glue (not bandages).

Without insurance, the cost of this surgery can range from $4,000-$10,000.

Recovery can take 6-8 weeks, with swelling taking up to an estimated total of 12 weeks to go down.
Post-surgery medications typically consist of pain medication, a stool softener, nausea meds, and antibiotics.

Types of Implants

Form-Stable Breast Implants

Sometimes refered to as "gummy bear" implants, these implants are made with thick silicone gel that retains its shape even if the shell is broken. These implants require a longer surgical incision than other implants.

Saline Breast Implants

These are implants filled with salt water. If they were to break, the body would naturally absorb the solution.

Silicone Breast Implants

These are implants made of silicone gel. Those who choose this option may have to see a plastic surgeon more frequently, to make sure that they are working properly. The silicone would leak out and not be absorbed like the saline option if broken.

Structured Saline Breast Implants

Similar to regular saline breast implants, these have more structure.

Fat Grafting

With fat grafting, the surgeon uses liposuction to take fat from another part of the body, then injects the fat into the breasts. Most surgeons do not recommend fat grafting due to the 40-50% failure rate.

Potential Risks

Note that these are the same risks for this surgery regardless of if the surgery is performed on a cisgender or a transgender woman.
