Mastectomy

(Top Surgery)

General Questions

What is top surgery?
Top surgery most commonly refers to when AFAB individuals get their breasts removed. Originally designed for patients of breast cancer, modified versions are available for transgender men.
Note that some intersex men will also get similar surgeries.

Why would someone get their breasts removed?
Typically, someone will get top surgery because the presence of breasts makes them feel dysphoric. Anyone who qualifies can get top surgery if they so choose.

What about a reduction?
Some individuals decide not to get a full mastectomy due to personal preferences. Insurance also does not always cover top surgery, and sometimes it can be easier to get a reduction covered, especially if you have additional reasons to do so (such as back pain).

Which surgery can you get?
This is an answer which can be discussed with a surgeon. There are different qualifications for different types of surgeries.
