What are breast forms?
Breast forms are artificial breasts (often made of silicone, gel, or foam) which are worn to give the appearance of not having a flat chest. They can be inserts for bras, adhesive, or bigger garments.
Why would someone wear these?
Breast forms can be worn by anyone who does not have breasts but would like to.
They are typically worn by transgender women, and cisgender women who have had mastectomies due to cancer.
They are typically used to alleviate gender dysphoria.
What bras are best to use when wearing breast forms?
Front closure bras. Pocket bras.
Why not just get breast augmentation?
Not everyone wants breast augmentation.
Breast forms are not permanent, and some non-binary people like having the option of only sometimes having breasts.
Someone who is starting out exploring their identity might prefer these as they are cheaper and more accessible than surgery.
Foam breast form inserts are lightweight, making them more convenient for everyday wear. They are also typically cheaper than other types of breast forms. For these reasons, they are sometimes considered a "beginner" option.
Not as soft as the other options, gel breast forms are sturdy and durable. They can be trimmed to the preffered shape of the wearer.
Silicone breast forms are soft, and highly customizable in terms of color, shape, weight, and looking/feeling like actual breasts. For these reasons, they can very quickly become one of the most expensive options available in terms of breast forms.
They can be self-adhesive (attatched directly to the chest) or worn in a pocket bra.
Note that silicone breast forms are susceptible to damage from sharp objects.
