Penectomies originate as a form of cancer treatment. This page will be discussing penectomies in terms of gender-affirming care.
A penectomy is the removal of the penis. Typically, for transgender women, this is done alongside vaginoplasty. During vaginoplasty, parts of the penis are removed, while other parts are reshaped into a vulva and/or vagina. When done on its own, a penectomy is sometimes referred to as a "smoothie" procedure.
